How-To Tether My Droid For Mobile Freelance Design

how to tether droid to computer

In order to stay mobile, we need to harness the internet and take it with us. You are paying out the wazoo for that Droid data plan, and today I’ll share my personal setup to exploit it. The best thing is you do not need root access on your phone to do this!

What you’ll need

  • Laptop
  • Cell Phone With App Compatibility (works with Iphone and Android for sure)
  • USB Connection Cable
  • Unlimited Cellular Data Plan
  • EasyTether Pro App ($9.99)
For this setup, I am using a Samsung Fascinate Android and an HP laptop. Your Android will basically turn into a mobile modem to allow your computer to access the internet from anywhere that offers cell phone service.

Download Drivers To Laptop If Needed

You will need to download the EasyTether Pro client app to your computer.

Not all phones and computers work together perfectly from the start. For instance, my Samsung Fascinate requires that I download a Samsung driver for the phone to be able to connect via USB.

All Samsung phones require additional driver

All LG phones require additional driver

Download EasyTether Pro App

You can download the app from the Android market as EasyTether Pro or just scan the QR code below. By default, the application is a demo but you can unlock more features by paying 9.99. The fee covers lifetime and you get the ability to connect to HTTPS websites, like hotmail. You will also need to activate pro in order to use ftp connections on dreamweaver (use passive). Also be sure to enable USB Debugging in your Android settings.

EasyTether Pro supports Windows 7/Vista/XP (32-bit and 64-bit), Mac OS X 10.7/10.6/10.5/10.4, Ubuntu 10.4+ and Fedora 13+

Conclusion

I use EasyTether Pro and my Android cell phone to connect to the internet when I travel. With nearly 1 megabyte on my Verizon connection, I can connect to my web server and access the files I need. It’s a little slower than my home connection, but it sure beats searching for a free WiFi or paying 20 bucks at a hotel for one night.

You can check out the developer website for further instructions. I didn’t go into detail about full setup because there are so many different phone models and carriers. If you are really having problems please post comments, and I’ll try to help out by adding some instructions.
